Finale - Presentation Board
After coming out with our final solution - INDEPENDENT STICK, we made a presentation board to introduce this product. Based on the product rendered by Joven and colour scheme chosen by Yenyee, I arranged this layout and typed out an introduction, some elaboration of our problem and the features our our product.
I used Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop to complete the adjustment and clip art.
After a round of consultation with our beloved lecturers, it seems to have a lots of corrections.
1.Typo error
2.Should use more design terminology
3.Do not purposely compress the content
4.Add subject title for each category
5.Scan the sketches instead of taking picture
6.Draw appropriate clip art to present the meaning
7.Focus mistake and et cetera
8. Too many font types.
I shall make another presentation board after the corrections.

Features of GPS
There are some features of GPS that we could have include in our upcoming mobility aid as the more functions we include the more different group of elderly we can help.
As different elderly's condition requires different features to overcome their problem.
Based on some online research, I think some are useful to include in our mobility aid:
Waze is designed to detect the condition of traffic whether there is a jam or accident going on.

Waze is designed to detect the condition of traffic whether there is a jam or accident going on.
Instead of the road traffic maybe we could feature a condition of pedestrians path so the elderly can avoid using the path which have a lots of crowd.
Glympse is another apps designed based on GPS which allow the user to share their location . It is very useful for elderly with light Alzheimer disease so the respective guardian can look for them easily if they got lost.
Taxi Magic allows user to find taxi based on their location and online booking. This is useful too cause elderly might easily get lost in the newly constructed city. They can quickly grab a cab to go back home without mention their location address.
Lookout Security and Antivirus should be useful too as the elderly might misplaced their mobility aid. What if it is expensive? We have to find it back.

The Final SOLUTION
By
combining the features of 2 solutions , a new mobility aid is
invented. The wheelchair with magnetic levitation is eventually eliminated based on high technology used
cost a lot and not easy in maintenance.
Features of the newly invented mobility aid:
1. Hand
grip’s material is cool gel to defeat sweaty palm and prevent slippery.
2.Global Positioning System is used to direct way.
3. Round
bottom design encourage smooth walking and does not stuck in drain’s cap.
4. Surface made of reinforced tyre texture.
5. Paddle
can be used to lift up foot on to another platform.
5. Light.
6. Low
cost.
7. Easy
to operate.
The
new mobility aid introduced is named Independent Stick as the intention of
designing this tool is to encourage elderly to step out in this crowded city
and move around independently.

Interview with MR.WONG
We did interview at Rochor Centre last week with Mr Wong.
Mr Wong is selected as his characteristic match our persona, who is supposed to be 70 years old, has difficulty in walking, stays nearby and usually has no accompany.
We had design a series of question to understand their opinion better on the upcoming design,
the following is the record of our interview:

Thank you very much in getting in
touch with us and taking part in this interview. We are current diploma student
from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts who are working on a project to invent a
mobility aid which will widely accepted by the elderly and decrease the
difficulty of their mobility. Please let us know if you do not want to answer
or have doubt with any of the following questions. We will start now and the
interview is about 15 minutes.
Interviewer: What are the obstacles
faced usually during the travel from your house to this hawker centre?
Interviewee: Too many people
surround me. Too far from my house. Tiring.
Interviewer: How do you feel to move
around this area when the place is crowded?
Interviewee: Very dangerous. I
almost fall down last time when someone accidentally pushed me.
Interviewer: Where is the furthest
place you will go in Bugis area?
Interviewee: Probably Guan Yin
Temple.
Interviewer: Have you ever get any
accident when traveling around this area? If so, would you like to share the
experience with us?
Interviewee: I fell down once in the
wet market but the shop owner quickly helped me and no serious injuries caused.
Interviewer: If you are going to own
a new mobility aid, would you prefer a manual tool or motorized device? We
would like to listen to your reason of making this choice too.
Interviewee: A manual one will be
good enough. I probably cannot afford a motorized one and it is very hard to
operate.
Interviewer: What do you think is the disadvantage of the
current mobility aid that you are using?
Interviewee: The support quite weak.
Sometime I found no difference even though I was using it.
Interviewer: What do you like about
the current mobility aid that you are using?
Interviewee: Light , handy and
cheap.
Interviewer: Thank you very much.
Your responses are very useful to us!
Interviewee: My pleasure!
W e really thank the help of Mr Wong in fulfilling the session.

My idea on designing mobility aid
My design's criteria-
cheap/ low budget
light
handy
not so high technology
correct a minor error in their life to improve lifestyle
cheap/ low budget
light
handy
not so high technology
correct a minor error in their life to improve lifestyle
idea of the design came from observing elderly going up and down staircase by using hand to lift their knee up on the staircase while the walking cane is useless.
This tool is meant to lift elderly's leg up easier.
Mind map of DESIGNING
I think aeronautic, magletive and GPS are some of the challenging innovation to the future mobility aid we are going to think about, We will never worry about the obstacles on different road types if the device is meant to have no friction with floors.
Besides that,GPS is another good idea in avoiding road with obstacles, alternatively helping user with Alzheimer.

Seat wherever You Want !
Walk-A-Seat is a walking stick with fold out seat!
- seat height: 550mm
- Load capacity: 115kg
- Maximum weight: >1kg
This tool is amazing! It is too useful if the user is in a queue , mrt or wherever without looking for a seat or waiting other finds them a seat.
The product is very stable too! Here I found a feature on youtube about the review of this tool.
I think this is a good example of design which I can learn from. The aim / intention of design is simple but challenging. The product perfectly achieve the requirement and it somehow looks easy and simple.

Primary Research Method
Our aim now is to invent a budget, handy and revolutionary walking device which help elderly to travel easily within Bugis area.
We discussed on the project and decided to carry out 3 primary researches in order to understand deeper about the issue we have.
1. Yenyyee will be doing interview with one resident in Bugis who matches the characteristics of our persona.
Possible questions to asked included the feeling of moving among the crowd, the obstacles faced in moving , his wish in improving the quality of elderly's movement and etc.
The aim of carrying this interview is to understand better the feeling of elderly with difficulties in moving in Bugis area. We would like to know the fact from the words provided by the interviewee and adopt their opinion in our invention because one of our expected achievement is to make the tool widely accepted by the majority of elderly.

2. Joven is responsible to carry out 2 survey: one on line and one in hard copy. The hard copy will be distributed to 20 elders in Bugis area while the on line survey will be done through surveymonkey and we are aiming the young generations' response.
The questions included would be general feeling on elderly with moving difficulties , preferred walking device if applicable, budget which they willing to spend on themselves/ elderly in the family for walking device.
We think survey is one of the best way for us to receive opinions from a population or more than one.
3. I should contribute in making observation. The fixed variable here is elderly who is crossing this road within the limited time on traffic light
the expected manipulated elements including: the walking device used and the health condition.
The result should be recorded in photos and a chart whether the respective elderly successfully cross this road.
The outcome of this observation is important for us to decide whether shall we design a manual or motorised walking device.
Anyway, the research methods chosen could be varied according to the result of our consultation with our lecturers today.
Yenyee was writing the outcome of our discussion on the mahjong paper
Keep the spirit! It just began!~

INVENTION that improve the quality of elderly's movement

| IBOT |
The iBOT is a powered wheelchair developed by Dean Kamen in a partnership between DEKA and Johnson and Johnson's Independence Technology division.
As of 2009, it is no longer available for sale from Independence Technology, but support for existing units was available until the end of 2013. Production was discontinued for cost reasons; only a few hundred were sold per year at a retail price of about $25,000, and Medicare paid only $5000.
The iBOT has a number of features distinguishing it from most powered wheelchairs:
- By rotating its two sets of powered wheels about each other, the iBOT can "walk" up and down stairs, much like a cog railway or a rack and pinion with the two wheels as the "teeth" of the gear.
- The iBOT is capable of tethered remote control operation, useful for loading the wheelchair up ramps into vehicles, or "parking" out of the way when not occupied.
- Custom software receives data via various sensors and gyroscopes, allowing the iBOT to maintain balance during certain maneuvers.
- It allows the user to rise from a sitting level to approximately 6' tall. The user may also travel in this "standing" configuration.
- It can climb and descend curbs ranging from 0.1 to 5.0 inches, according to the manufacturer's specifications. The limits are determined by the rider's technique and risk tolerance.
- It is capable of traveling through many types of terrain, including sand, gravel, and water up to 3" deep.

Ibot is just amazing and I wish we could see it appears on the market soon. I found something similar around us but I am not so supportive towards this tool as it actually brought inconvenience.

Know a little bit more about BUGIS
In order to find out a way to allow elderly to travel easily within the community, Bugis, I have to know more about Bugis. Let's start with knowing some of it's history.
Bugis, in Singapore, was renowned internationally from the 1950s to the 1980s for its nightly gathering of trans women, a phenomenon which made it one of Singapore's top tourist destinations during that period.
Back to Pre- 1950, the Bugis, an ethnic group from South Sulawesi sailed up to this place and carried out trading with Singaporean merchants.
The Cantonese, however, referred to the street as Hak Gaai or Hei Jie in Mandarin (黑街; black street) as there were many clubs catering to the Japanese invaders in the 1940s. During the first half of the 20th century.

After World War II, hawkers gathered there to sell food and goods. There was initially also a small number of outdoor bars set up beside rat-infested drains.
When transvestites began to rendezvous in the area in the 1950s, they attracted increasing numbers of Western tourists who came for the booze, the food, the pasar malam shopping and the "girls". Business boomed and Bugis Street became an extremely lively and bustling area.
In the mid-1980s, Bugis Street underwent major urban redevelopment into a retail complex of modern shopping malls, restaurants and nightspots mixed with regulated back-alley roadside vendors. Underground digging to construct the Bugis MRT station prior to that also caused the upheaval and termination of nightly transgender sex bazaar culture, marking the end of a colourful and unique era in Singapore's history.

Well, as a foreigner, I never know that I m studying in a place where full with colourful history. Good to know that. It is clearly shown that Bugis is a place where has been developed since more than half decade ago. The facilities and buildings around are built one followed by another. The area is less organised and seems to be crowded because of its position as downtown core. However, we cannot forget that there are a numbers of elderly are staying there since they were young.
Reconstruct the city?
Invent an amazing tool?
What should we do to make it easier for elderly to travel within this community?
I am overwhelmed with these questions.

About PRESENTATION
10 points in making a
good presentation
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
10-20-30 rule-this is a slide show guide introduced by Guy Kawasaki which a good
slides should not be more than 10 slides,20 minutes and font which smaller than
30 pt.
Entertaining- catch people attention
Eye contact-always make sure the audiences are with you
Never ever read your slide- By doing that is boring people and you are
only telling the meaning shown on words
Use voice effectively- Avoid monotone. Try animated voice when
necessary .Speak out clearly
Focus more on body language- NEVER plan gesture. It looks false
Tell story-description and theory bored people
Always end early-Respect audiences’ time. If you are given
20minutes, end it at about 15minutes.Try to make your presentation short and sweet at
the same time
Practice more
Public-Focus on audiences’ needs.

Good example
JULIA SWEENEY- THE TALK
The talk is about sex education for children.Julia's told us the importance of answering children's doubt about sex properly and the effects of false education.
She got the audiences understood he talk without slides and word typed.
The talk is simply entertaining, educating, and short.
I did not get any of the point of this presentation when I was listening.I was too attracted by the story she told. However, I got it all right after the talk is over.

| Walking in the crowd |
Thanks to Joven, one of the member of this group in volunteering himself to experience this role play session.
Only a walking stick is used in this session as we assume our persona is too poor to own a wheelchair. Joven had no accompany as he supposed to be a retired soldier who lives alone but with pride.
Reflection:
1.DANGEROUS- there are a lots of stair cases to be climbed through out the trip.
-there are a lots of traffic junction in the city.
-all places are crowded and the public werenot aware of person with disability.
2.EMBARRASSING- he was walking quite slow and blocking the way of people in urge.
-some public were disgusted with him.
-he does not own a senior citizen's ez-link which can be used to extend road crossing time.
-he blocked traffic.
3.TIRING- it took us so much time to finish this trip compared to usual.
-7 minutes in usual became 45 minutes
-road surfaces are made up by different texture which are not easy to walk on
